Meet the 2009 Kids Voting
Citizenship Scholarship Winners

Two outstanding young women who reflect the vision of Kids Voting were selected by the Board of Directors as the 2009 recipients of the first-annual Kids Voting scholarships.
Seniors Kristina Cole of Westerville Central High School and Alexandra Hajohn of Columbus Alternative High School both model civic leadership through school and volunteer activities. Both students found time amid challenging academic and school commitments to play active roles with the Kids Voting Youth Council.

A “passion for politics”
KristiKristi discovered a passion for politics while volunteering on campaigns last fall. She went door to door to inform residents of their polling locations and encourage them to get out and vote, “regardless of who they were supporting."

Kristi has voted in Kids Voting elections since 4th grade and voted in her first official election in May. She attended Buckeye Girls State, served as a senior class officer, co-president of Student Government, and was a member of National Honor Society. She will major in political science at George Washington University next fall.

No more complacency
alexAlex Hajohn is another outstanding student representative of the Kids Voting mission. As a Youth at the Booth poll worker last fall, Alex helped hundreds of citizens vote, even though she was not old enough to vote herself.

At Columbus Alternative High School, Alex served as Secretary/Treasurer of National Honor Society and an officer and founder of several student organizations. Alex was senior editor of the school’s literary magazine and the winner of several writing awards. Alex graduated with an International Baccalaureate diploma.

Alex believes that citizens cannot be complacent on issues they care about. She will attend The Ohio State University’s Honors Program this fall, where she looks forward to motivating other students to make their voices heard.

Both Kristi and Alex received $1,000 scholarship awards from specially designated funds raised primarily by the Kids Voting Board.
